5th Conference of the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas

Department of Asian Studies, University of Copenhagen


ISSCO

ISSCO, the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas, was established in 1992. Professor Wang Gungwu, National University of Singapore, was appointed President and Professor Wang Ling-chi, Department of Ethnic Studies, UC Berkeley, Secretary-Treasurer together with a number of regional Board members.

ISSCO is a scholarly, non-political, non-profit professional society of individuals and institutions interested in and committed to the study of Chinese overseas. The primary purposes of the society are to advance research and scholarly exchange in the study of Chinese overseas, to provide means for research and publications, and to organise and support national and international conferences.

Every four years, ISSCO organises international conferences:

1. Berkeley (1992): Luodi shenggen: The Legal, Political, and Economic Status of Chinese in the Diaspora convened by UC, Berkeley.

2. Hong Kong (1994): The Last Half Century of Chinese Overseas: Comparative Perspectives convened by Hong Kong University with 262 scholars.

3. Manila (1998): Intercultural Relations, Cultural Transformation of ethnic Chinese communities convened by Kaiasa Para Sa Kaunlaran, Inc. and Ateneo de Manila with 171 scholars.

4. Taipei (2001): New Frontiers for Chinese Overseas Research convened by Academia Sinica with 134 scholars.

5. Copenhagen (2004): New Chinese Migrants and Globalisation of Chinese Overseas Migration convened by NIAS and the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Copenhagen .

Regional conferences are also organised each year.
