Goodbye iSlave - A Manifesto for Digital Abolition

Guest lecture by Jack Linchuan Qiu, Professor, School of Journalism & Communication, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)

Welcome to a brave new world of capitalism propelled by high tech, guarded by enterprising authority, and carried forward by millions of laborers, enslaved along the assembly line and inside the data mine. Is this what humanity is destined for? Focusing on the notorious Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn and instances of maniac Apple consumers in China, Jack Qiu examines how corporations and governments collude to build systems of domination, exploitation, and alienation. He contends that the conditions of labor have deteriorated so much that they parallel the Atlantic slave trade. Arguing as a digital abolitionist, Qiu draws inspiration from transborder activist groups and incidents of grassroots resistance to make a passionate plea aimed at uniting--and liberating--the forgotten workers who make our twenty-first-century lives possible.
